Political Science: Books and Journal Articles

This guide will help you find scholarly resources in political science.

Beginning Your Research

Reference books are great places to begin your research. Buley Library has many political science encyclopedias that can give you an overview of a topic before you begin looking for more specific information. Each of these pages has a list of relevant reference books.

Terminology

Keep in mind that politics is a very general term. It's important to be as specific as possible. When searching the databases or catalog, try also using the words policy, policies, elections, voting, government, and any other appropriate terms.

Finding Books

Look for books in the library catalog,SouthernSearch. A good place to start is with a keyword search, which allows you to combine concepts, such as "women and politics" or "voter turnout and race."

Remember that this is the catalog for all of the CSU campuses, so before you go to the shelf make sure the catalog says the item you want is at SCSU.

If you see an item at any of the other campuses that you need, you can request it by logging into your Sailpoint account.  Next, click "Get It" and then choose the item you are requesting.

Finding Scholarly Articles

If you are connecting from offcampus, you will need to use your student ID# and Library PIN to log in.

EBSCO Databases: Depending on your topic, these databases can be combined for simultaneous searching. The EBSCO databases contain many fulltext articles. If the fulltext of the article is not available, click on the  icon to see if another database has the fulltext.
