Newbery Medal Books at Buley
The Newbery Medal
is a yearly award that honors an
outstanding contribution to American children’s literature. It is named after
John Newbery, who was a bookseller in the
1700s, in England. Candidate books for the Newbery
Medal must be published no later than the
year prior to the award year in question.
They also must be written by a US citizen or resident. Newbery Medal
candidate books can be fiction, nonfiction or poetry. They are judged solely on
their written material, and not by presentation of illustrations.
