This is an information literacy guide for students taking Tier II courses. Students will learn how to access, identify, evaluate, and use information accurately and ethically.

What's in this Guide?

This is a guide to information literacy for students taking Tier 2 courses.  It is designed to help students find and use reliable research resources in the SCSU library and on the web. Students will learn how to use the library's catalog effectively to find and locate books, e-books, and multi-media. Students will also be introduced to the library databases and learn which databases to use for their research topics.  They will learn different search strategies for retrieving relevant articles for their papers and projects. Students will also understand how to evaluate and cite the information they find in print and online so as to make them better learners and researchers.

What is Information Literacy?

Information Literacy is the ability to find, retrieve, analyse, evaluate, and use information effectively and ethically.It is especially important that in today's world of information explosion students know how to locate information and use it accurately and appropriately for a specific purpose. Librarians at Buley Library can help students become information literate by showing them how to find reliable and accurate information in the library and on the web.

An information literate student will know 

  • How much information is needed
  • How to find and access the information needed
  • How to critically evaluate that information
  • How to use that information for a specific purpose
  • How to use the information ethically
