E — Education

A — Arts

IDEA Lab is a service provided by the Hilton C. Buley University Library to support learning, creativity and exploration in a rapidly changing technology environment. We are a makerspace which encourages makers or aspiring-makers to take an idea and make something from it.

The Library's exploration in Makerspaces began in 2015 with the acquisition of a 3D printer and some electronic kits. We are greatful to Cindy Schofield, former Head of Technical Services in Buley Library, who founded and established this project.

Concept and Purpose

The Buley Makerspace and the Maker Collection are library space and material resources that are intended to be used for cross-disciplinary collaboration to design, imagine, build and problem solve and provide an experiential research and learning platform to be used by

  • SCSU students, faculty, and community partners
  • Outreach programs focused on learning and exploration for K-12 students in greater New Haven
  • Practicum experience teaching by SCSU education and library science students

It provides a collaborative environment for unstructured exploration of emerging technologies and promotes a creative maker community, supporting and enhancing  the university curriculum.  It provides practicum experience opportunities for pre-service education and library science students and in service training opportunities for area teachers and educators.   A collection of onsite “maker” equipment and lendable kits compliments the Makerspace site.  The collection is evaluated and updated on a regular basis.
