What is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI)? What is an emerging HSI (eHSI)?

Hispanic-Serving Institutions one of seven Minority-Serving Institution types: AANAPISI (Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution), ANNH (Alaskan Native-Serving or Native Hawaiian-Serving Institution), HBCU (Historically Black College or University), HSI (Hispanic-Serving Institution), NASNTI (Native American-Serving Nontribal Institution, PBI (Predominantly Black Institution) AND TCU (Tribal College or University).

According the the U.S. Department of Education, a Hispanic-Serving Institution is defined as an institution of higher education that--

(A) is an eligible institution; and

(B) has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.

Southern Connecticut State University is considered an emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution (eHSI). An eHSI is an institution with an undergraduate Hispanic enrollment between 15 -24 percent.
