Connecticut's Own: THE NUTMEG BOOK AWARD

  • The Nutmeg Book Award encourages children in grades 2-12 to read quality literature and to choose their favorite from a list of ten nominated titles.

  • We have four divisions: Elementary (grades 2-3); Intermediate (grades 4-6); Middle School (grades 7-8); and High School (grades 9-12)

  • Jointly sponsored by the Connecticut Library Association (CLA) and the Connecticut Association of School Librarians (CASL), the Nutmeg Committee is comprised of children's librarians and school library media specialists who are members of our sponsoring organizations.

Batchelder Award

Awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), for an outstanding title originally published outside the U.S. in a language other than English.

Caldecott Medal

Awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), for outstanding illustration.

Coretta Scott King Book Award

Awarded by the American Library Association (ALA) for inspirational books by an African American author or illustrator.

Edgar Awards

Awarded by the Mystery Writers of America (MWA) for distinguished work in the mystery genre.

Horn Book Fanfare

Selected by reviewers and editors at Horn Book Magazine, annual list of best books published for children.

Jane Addams Children's Book Award

Awarded by the Jane Addams Peace Association (JAPA) for books related to social justice, world peace, and equality of the sexes and races.

Junior Library Guild Selections

Selected by the Junior Library Guild (JLG), a collection development and book review service; best books--chosen before publication.

National Book Award

Established in 1950, the National Book Awards are American literary prizes administered by the National Book Foundation, a nonprofit organization.

Newbery Medal

Awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), for distinguished contribution to American children's literature.

Notable Book for a Global Society Award

Awarded by the Children’s Literature and Reading Special Interest Group (CL/R SIG) of the International Reading Association (IRA) for outstanding books enhancing understanding of people and cultures.

Schneider Family Book Award

Awarded by the American Library Association (ALA) to an author or illustrator for artistic expression of the disability experience.

Stonewall Book Award

Awarded by the American Library Association (ALA) for English language works of merit related to the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender experience.

Sydney Taylor Book Award

Awarded by the Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) for outstanding children's books that portray the Jewish experience.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Award

Awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), for distinguished American books in English for beginning readers.

Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People

Awarded by the National Council for Social Studies for books that emphasis human relations, diversity, and a broad range of cultural experiences.

Outstanding Science Trade Book Award

Awarded by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) for outstanding books that build literacy while presenting science content.

Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Medal

Awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), for distinguished informational books published in English in the United States.
