What are Scholarly Communication Tools?

Scholarly communication has moved beyond the journal onto the full realm of the internet. To get recognition of your work, it is no longer sufficient to just be a good scientist. Self-marketing is important and part of that is putting your work out there, and tracking what happens to it. Scholarly communication and impact tools can be useful when job-hunting, applying for promotion and tenure, gaining grants and other funding, and attracting students and colleagues to work with you. And the really good thing is that most of these tools require some set up, but not a lot of maintenance. You can easily incorporate using these tools into your regular workflow, and improve your recognition and, in some cases, your science. (Note: these tools have varying privacy policies and agendas. Always be mindful of the privacy of your data and share only as much as you should—but do share as much as you can!)
