Welcome to the Italian Renaissance Art Research Guide at Buley Library!

Getting Started

Unlike Google, the library and scholarly databases cannot understand sentences or natural language, therefore you will need to break down your topic into keywords. These keywords may include topic words, place/location names, dates or time periods, etc. Define your topic as clearly and as completely as possible. Write down the main concepts as keywords, and then write down some synonyms for these keywords.

  1. Locate background information in encyclopedias, dictionaries, reference books, and other online sources. Example: Oxford Art Online
  2. Search SouthernSearch for books.  Note the call number and availability for materials in Buley Library. You must sign in  (enter your username and password) to request materials from other CSCU libraries.
  3. Search the Art Databases and print indexes for journal articles available in Buley Library, online, and in other libraries. Locate reproductions and images using the databases and Artstor.
  4. Use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services if needed
  5. Document your sources

SouthernSearch is the shared library catalog for SCSU and the CT State Colleges and Universities (CSCU). Use the search box and the center pull-down menu to select books and collections at SCSU, CT State Colleges and Universities, and to find research materials such as books, ebooks, articles, and course reserve materials. Use the limiters on the left to focus your search.

To locate a print book on the shelf in Buley Library, take note of the location of the book and the call number. SCSU students can request materials from other CSCU libraries for pickup at Buley Library. Before you begin your research, please be sure that you are logged into your library account on the Buley Library Website (see "My Account" on top right).

Use the Interlibrary Loan service to request books and articles outside of the CSCU system.
