Searching for journal articles:

Some database have special search features that can help with searching for specific populations.

  • Medline, CINAHL, & PsycInfo have In/Out Patient, Pregnancy, Transgender, and Age Group options (see the Advanced Search for all the options);
  • Sport Discus has a Database Subset (Advanced Search) for Handicapped/Disabled Sport and Recreation Documents;
  • In ERIC, you can search by Education Level (Advanced Search), including grade level.

In most databases, there are standardized terms for population groups. Using those terms will make your searches more comprehensive (you'll find more articles about your topics.) When you do a search, look for the Subject or Descriptor terms that relate to your population and redo the search using those terms.

Sometimes you may also want to include many alternative terms, which you can search all at once by using the OR option: (Hispanic OR Latino OR Latina OR Latine OR Latinx OR Latin American OR Spanish-speaking). It's usually easiest to do this in the Advanced Search by putting in all the alternative terms, with OR in between each word or phrase, in one box and then using the other boxes for additional terms and concepts. You can add as many terms as you want in most databases.
